Wolves hit by Cunha injury

LONDON: Wolverhampton Wanderers are likely to be without Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha for an extended period after he suffered a hamstring injury, manager Gary O’Neil said on Wednesday.

It is a blow for the Premier League club who have been impressive since the turn of the year, including a 4-2 win at Chelsea in which Cunha, 24, scored a hat-trick.

He was injured during last weekend’s match at Brentford.

“It’s a pretty significant hamstring injury. There’s no timetable. I’ve talked to Matheus a lot and he just wants to keep pushing to get back as quickly as possible,” O’Neil said.

“He’s already started working on it, so we’re just going to monitor him week by week, day by day.

“It’s obviously a big blow for us, for the team and for Matheus because of the work he did. The form he was in was exceptional. These things happen, every team suffers from injuries.”

Wolves sit 11th in the Premier League table and face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
