‘We let you down’: South African Olympian killed at 24

A South African footballer and Olympian was tragically killed aged 24 after being shot during a botched carjacking, according to reports.

Kaiser Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs is believed to have been fatally injured during the shocking attempt in the Gauteng region of Florida, ten miles west of Johannesburg.

The devastating incident reportedly took place on Wednesday evening.

South African Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo told Sunday World in South Africa: “Police are currently awaiting information on the incident.

“We will comment further on the matter once we have gathered the details.”

Sports news site iDiski Times added that a member of Fleurs’ family confirmed the news.

The Kaiser Chiefs have not yet made a public statement.

But comments poured in from heartbroken fans, stunned and saddened by the terrible news.

One said: “REST IN PEACE LUKE. It’s so sad and sorry, my deepest condolences to his loved ones. RIP.”

Another wrote: “Rest in peace, king. »

A third added: “Sad day for South African sport.”

A fourth commented: “I can’t believe it. »

A fifth typed: “He had his whole life ahead of him. »

A sixth replied: “I can’t believe it after seeing him a few days ago, incredibly sad moment, my deepest condolences to his loved ones. »

And one end user replied: “Sorry Luke. We failed you, brother. This country is in a terrible situation. Rest easy Luke Fleurs.

Central defender Fleurs joined the Joburg-based club from SuperSport United on a two-year contract in October 2023.

Upon signing, he wrote on Instagram: “Dreams come true,” along with a photo of his beaming smile in the famous gold shirt.

Just two weeks later, the Cape Town-born star added: “Yeah mom, I came off the streets, I hope you’re finally proud.”

Flowers has been dubbed one of the brightest emerging defensive talents in South African football.

However, he woefully failed to make his debut for Kaiser Chiefs, once making the bench for the 12-time league title winners on March 5, two days after his 24th birthday.

Flowers were not named in the matchday squad for yesterday’s 1-0 home defeat to Stellenbosch.

He represented South Africa at U17 and U23 levels.

And that included competing for his country at the delayed 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

But despite being called up to the men’s team twice, he did not earn a Bafana Bafana senior cap.

Fleurs met his centre-back idol Carles Puyol for his 18th birthday, posing for a photo with the Barcelona and Spain legend.
