Taylor Swift’s trip to Las Vegas ends with a Super Bowl victory

The Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl title in the last five seasons by defeating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, 25-22, on Sunday. While some NFL players go their entire career without winning a championship, one of Kansas City’s newcomers walked away victorious in his 13th game.

Taylor Swift, who is dating Kansas City star tight end Travis Kelce, has changed the NFL conversation all season, attracting a new audience to the league and inspiring strong emotions (both positive and negative) among the fans. And as expected, she was at the stadium and cheer on Mr. Kelce and the Chiefs in their come-from-behind victory.

After the match, Ms. Swift celebrated on the field with Donna Kelce and the rest of Kansas City’s friends and family while Mr. Kelce sang a truly memorable performance of “Viva Las Vegas”.

She then met Mr. Kelce to celebrate after his speech.

“It was incredible,” she said told him in a video shot on the field after the match. “It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever experienced.”

Mr. Kelce, who is expected to celebrate with his teammates in a victory parade in Kansas City on Wednesday, was asked after the game if any couple had ever had a better week than Ms. Swift. win two Grammys and Mr. Kelce win the Super Bowl.

“On top of the world right now, baby,” he says. “It’s a good feeling.”

Mrs. Swift, as you may have heard, is good at keeping secrets. His projects, beyond concert dates, are rarely announced in advance. This has led some to devise their own methods of understanding what it does. For example, before a Kansas City game in October, an NBC producer said he had an observation plane searching the area around MetLife Stadium for police escorts in hopes of alerting the TV crew if she showed up (she did).

Mr Kelce was inundated with questions about Ms Swift last week, and although he said he had heard some of her upcoming album – spoiler: he likes it – he didn’t give any details about his participation in the match.

But she arrived at Allegiant Stadium Sunday afternoon in time for the game. She walked through the stadium tunnels a black top and pants while slinging a red jacket over her shoulder – and wearing a personalized diamond and gold necklace from Stephanie Gottlieb with Mr. Kelce’s number 87 on it – then she headed to the luxury suites.

The CBS broadcast didn’t show much of it during a quiet first half for Mr. Kelce and Kansas City, but it was shown regularly as the team came back to win the game, Mr. Kelce providing several key plays in the fourth quarter and overtime. .

She certainly was. Her Eras tour resumed recently and on Saturday night in Tokyo she performed another marathon of her extensive catalog of songs. With flights from Tokyo to Las Vegas often taking 13 hours or more and human beings needing to sleep, some feared she wouldn’t make the game.

The Japanese Embassy in Washington underlines this timing was not a real obstacle for Ms. Swift. First, a private jet shortens the journey (and provides a place to sleep peacefully if needed). Second, the international meeting line was his friend.

In 1873, before the International Date Line officially existed, author Jules Verne mapped Ms. Swift’s time advantage in “Around the World in 80 Days.” In the book, the protagonist Phileas Fogg believes he has lost his bet only to realize that the distance and direction of his journey had saved him:

In traveling eastwards, he had headed towards the sun, and the days therefore diminished for him as many times four minutes as he crossed the degrees in that direction. There are three hundred and sixty degrees on the circumference of the earth; and these three hundred and sixty degrees, multiplied by four minutes, give precisely twenty-four hours, that is to say the day unconsciously gained. In other words, while Phileas Fogg, heading east, saw the sun pass the meridian eighty times, his friends in London only saw him crossing the meridian seventy nine times. That’s why they were expecting him at the Reform Club on Saturday, and not Sunday, as Mr. Fogg thought.

Or, as “The West Wing” puts it more succinctly in a scene that evokes President Bartlett’s trip from Tokyo to Washington, D.C. (and which recently went viral online):

Josh: He’s going to land in Washington an hour before takeoff?
Sat : Yeah.

For older generations, these scenes helped explain the logistics of the international meeting line. For Gen Z and younger, their frame of reference will likely be… when Taylor Swift flew to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl.

During the regular season, Ms. Swift attended many games in Kansas City while sitting in a luxury suite controlled by Mr. Kelce’s close friend and longtime teammate, Patrick Mahomes. She appeared to become fast friends with Mr. Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, and was regularly seen with other members of the Mahomes family.

She also spent time at games with Mr. Kelce’s parents, Donna and Ed, and her own father, mother and brother accompanied her to a Christmas game. During Ms. Swift’s trip to New Jersey for a Chiefs-Jets game, she sat with friends like actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.

At a playoff game in Buffalo last month, she and Kylie Kelce were among those reacting to Jason Kelce’s Shirtless Bellows and fraternize with the crowd.

And at the AFC championship game in Baltimore, she was surrounded by Mr. Kelce’s family and associates, including Donna and Ed Kelce, Jason and Kylie Kelce and Mr. Kelce’s managers, Aaron and André Eanes. There were also a few friends of Ms. Swift, like actress Keleigh Teller and model Cara Delevingne.

For the Super Bowl, it was a similar crowd, with the Kelces, the Eanes brothers and Ms. Lively with Ms. Swift and her family. Additions to the typical team, in terms of who she was shown with during the match, included rapper Ice Spice – who entered the stadium with Ms Swift – and singer Lana Del Rey.

No one ever seemed to mind that Jack Nicholson was a light fixture at Los Angeles Lakers games, or Spike Lee being most associated with the New York Knicks than most of the players on the team. Drake only got A slap on the wrist when he began taking the court during timeouts during the Toronto Raptors’ playoff games. But even if Mrs. Swift receives relatively little air time during broadcasts of Kansas City games, she became the target of those who still think she attracts inordinate attention.

“The attention is there because the audience wants to see it,” Jason Kelce, Travis’ brother, said in an interview during last week’s Pro Bowl festivities. “If people didn’t want to see it, they wouldn’t show it. »

As Mrs Swift said so, “a few dads, Brad and Chad” may be angry, but the TV networks are happy. A grade analysis by The Upshot reported that she could very well be a driving factor in the league’s viewership growth. Chiefs coach Andy Reid has repeatedly said he’s happy to have him on board, and the NFL, experiencing an unexpected expansion of its built-in audience, has fully embraced his association with the league.

“NFL fans come in all shapes and sizes, even global sensations,” said NFL spokesman Alex Riethmiller. “We are happy to have Taylor on board.”

Ms Swift said she loves the number 13 and her fans can seemingly find it everywhere. In the case of this year’s Super Bowl, the examples are numerous:

  • Super Bowl 58 (5+8=13)

  • February 11, 2/11 (2+11=13)

  • Kansas City faces the 49ers (4+9=13)

  • The 49ers were the No. 1 seed in the NFC, while the Chiefs were the No. 3 seed in the AFC (1 and 3-13)

It wasn’t clear at the start of the day whether it was a good or bad sign that San Francisco’s starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, wore number 13. But in the end, it wasn’t a good sign. importance, since Ms. Swift’s 13th game of the NFL season ended with a victory for the Chiefs.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said the that a victory parade will take place on Wednesday (weather permitting). While there will surely be plenty of speculation about whether Ms Swift will attend, her Eras tour resumes in Melbourne on Friday, so the logistics would be even trickier than her trip to Las Vegas from Tokyo.
