Super Bowl won’t feature crypto ads in 2024, but two AI ads are planned


This year’s Super Bowl will most likely exclude cryptocurrency-related ads, CNN reported on February 2.

Paul Hardart, a clinical professor of marketing at New York University’s Stern School of Business, said the public would likely see a “noticeable shift away” from technology-related ads, particularly those featuring cryptography and technology. ‘AI.

Hardart said in a statement to CNN:

“Given current global uncertainties, including geopolitical conflicts and a polarized political climate…advertisers are turning to feel-good ads that focus more on fun, humor and entertainment, which aligns with the exhilarating spirit of the Super Bowl.”

Crypto-related Super Bowl ads peaked in February 2022. The event followed Bitcoin’s all-time high in November 2021, and although Bitcoin’s price fell in February, FTX, Coinbase, and eToro all aired commercials, apparently in an attempt to capitalize on previous hype around the prices.

This trend ended as suddenly as it began. The next Super Bowl, in February 2023, featured no crypto advertising. Reports at the time suggested that three crypto companies were planning or had secured ad spots. Yet these advertisers ultimately backed down after FTX collapsed a few months earlier in November.

The most important development this year – the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs – is positive. But while ads for crypto ETFs are attracting attention elsewhere, no asset manager has announced an ad in the upcoming game.

At least two AI ads are planned

Hardart suggested that Super Bowl ads would move away from AI this year. Despite this claim, Etsy plans to run an ad promoting its Gift Mode, a feature that uses AI and human curation to automate gift selection.

Google also announced that it would run an ad for its Pixel phone. This ad focuses on Pixel’s AI accessibility features for blind and visually impaired users. However, the ad takes a narrative approach and does not explicitly mention AI.

Previous years also featured few AI ads. Dialpad, which announced its AI-based customer intelligence platform in 2023, is an exception.

There is greater hype around chatbots and general-purpose AI services such as ChatGPT and OpenAI’s Microsoft Copilot. There is no indication that either company will advertise their product during this year’s Super Bowl event.
