Singer Ian “H” Watkins, better known as “H from Steps,” will be honored with an 8-foot statue.

The 47-year-old’s statue was announced by a community group in his home town of Cowbridge.

Funded through private donations and designed by a local artist, it will be erected in the heart of the city, outside the Bear Hotel.

The aim is to unveil the statue at Cowbridge Pride in June, an event founded by ‘H’ two years ago.

‘H’ – one fifth of the award-winning British group Not – also hosts a weekly radio show Wales and serves on its local city council.

He made history in 2020 as one half of Dancing on iceThey are the very first same-sex couple.

“When I got the email telling me, I fell off my chair,” Mr Watkins said.

“It’s one of my proudest moments – not bad for a Welsh boy who many people think is as stupid as a toilet brush.

“I love calling Cowbridge my home and am very passionate about doing my part to help make it a better, more inclusive and superb place to live.”

The five-piece pop group also includes Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee.

Together, they have achieved 14 consecutive top-five singles and 25 million record sales to date.

First formed in 1997, the group broke up in 2001 but has since reformed twice.

“H” said he was “very grateful” to the group behind the statue, Cultural Cowbridge, and its donors. He added that he couldn’t wait to “walk down the street and wave to me.”

Bethan Davies from Cultural Cowbridge said the group couldn’t think of “anyone more deserving” and had been “overwhelmed by the response”.
