Former Australian cricket team wicket-keeper batter Adam Gilchrist believes that the crowd’s reaction to Hardik Pandya during IPL 2024 shows the popularity and support that Rohit Sharma orders among supporters. Hardik ended Rohit’s ten-year tenure as Mumbai Indians skipper after completing a sensational trade deal with the Gujarat Titans. However, under his leadership, MI lost all three of their matches in IPL 2024 and Hardik was even booed by the crowd during the matches. Gilchrist pointed out that Hardik’s move to MI happened in a “mysterious manner” and the fans’ reaction towards the MI skipper actually shows their “tribalism and intensity”.

“It shows you Rohit Sharma’s status in the game there. The mysterious way in which everything happened initially, the pace with which it happened, everyone was stunned to see Mumbai taking Hardik away Pandya from Gujarat and then Rohit gave up his captaincy. It’s strange. But that’s the nature of the beast in the IPL. The tribalism and intensity within the fan bases. It’s difficult to replicate elsewhere with this level of intensity,” Gilchrist said on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

Gilchrist also recalled an instance where he was booed by Australian fans at home. He succeeds the famous wicketkeeper Ian Healy in the Australian Test team in 1999 and the fan reaction was not great when he made his ODI debut.

“I got hammered on the court. And all the way. So I know how (Hardik) feels, I’m just going to go after Hardik, and I’m going to pass him… I’m the whisperer, I know how to get into their mind and get them through. I’m going to move on to Hardik, I sent this message to MS, I’ll keep you posted on that and I’ll bring him up and we can get into his mind and help him , get out of the trouble they are in.
