New York judge extends gag order against Donald Trump after former president’s latest attacks

A New York judge has broadened his gag order on Donald Trumppreventing the former president from attacking family members of those involved in his upcoming criminal trial.

Trump is now prohibited from attacking the judge Juan MerchanFamily members of or those of prosecutor Alvin Bragg. That’s in addition to restrictions that restrict Trump’s comments about witnesses, as well as court staff and other prosecutors and their families. Trump is also limited in his comments about jurors or prospective jurors.

Earlier in the day, Bragg’s office asked Merchan to clarify the silence order, after Trump continually attacked the judge’s daughter by name and published an article featuring her photo.

Trump’s legal team said Trump was arguing the judge should be recused in the case. Trump argued that the judge’s daughter was biased against him.

But Merchan, in his ruling, wrote that “to claim that the most recent attacks, which included photographs, were ‘necessary and appropriate in the current environment’ is ridiculous.” »

Trump faces criminal charges linked to secret payments made to former porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. He has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of first-degree falsifying business records.

In his initial order of silence, Merchan wrote that, given the imminent start of the trial, “there is no doubt that the imminent risk of harm is now paramount.” He wrote that Trump’s statements “establish a sufficient risk to the administration of justice.”

In his most recent order, Merchan wrote that “the average observer must now, after hearing (Trump’s) recent attacks, draw the conclusion that if he is involved in these proceedings, even indirectly, he should not only worry about himself, but for their loved ones like GOOD. Such concerns undoubtedly undermine the fair administration of justice and constitute a direct attack on the rule of law itself. »
