National-level snooker player arrested for theft in Goa
Suleman Shaikh had represented Goa in the 2023 National Games
Panjim:
Goa police on Wednesday arrested two people, including a snooker player who had participated in the recently held National Games, for alleged involvement in burglaries and two-wheeler theft.
Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Nidhin Valsan said snooker player Suleman Shaikh and his accomplice Shabbirsaheb Shalavadi were arrested in connection with a series of house break-ins and two-wheeler thefts in the state.
Suleman Shaikh had represented Goa in the 2023 National Games, the police official said.
The duo apparently resorted to crime to finance their lavish lifestyle, including their casino addiction, Nidhin Valsan said.
The accused were wanted in connection with two burglaries in Porvorim, one in Mapusa and one in Mardol (all three in North Goa district) and a motorcycle theft in Margao in South Goa.
Gold and other valuables worth Rs 17 lakh were recovered from their possession, the official said. Police scanned footage from at least 50 CCTV cameras of the crime scene to trace the accused, he said.
Shaikh and Shalavadi were arrested from Porvorim on the outskirts of Panaji. While being questioned after being stopped on the road, they tried to flee but were chased and caught, the SP said, adding that further investigation was underway.
