A fight on the field during the Chicago Bulls-The Houston Rockets’ Thursday night game involving multiple players resulted in the ejection of star players DeMar DeRozan and Dillon Brooks. Houston ultimately won the game 127-117.

The matchup took place in the third quarter, with 6:02 remaining and the Rockets leading 84-75. As Houston’s Jalen Green carried the ball down the field, Chicago’s DeRozan came off a screen and checked his hip, sending Green onto the field in obvious agony.

Houston’s Brooks objected to what the referees later determined was a flagrant foul and immediately approached DeRozan. As DeRozan turned to Brooks, DeRozan elbowed him in the chin, escalating the feud, and other teammates almost immediately joined in. Team personnel and security also attempted to intervene.

Upon review, DeRozan’s initial foul was ruled a flagrant foul 2 and he was ejected. Brooks received a technical foul for inciting conflict and was subsequently expelled.

Both teams’ coaches addressed the conflict after the game.

“I think there was some contact on some practices, some fouls, some previous calls that weren’t made,” the Bulls interim coach said. Billy Donovan said. “Obviously DeMar jumped off that screen and fouled Green.”

“I don’t think DeMar’s intention was to get a blatant 2, it was definitely a foul and of course a blatant 1 and they shoot a free throw,” Donovan said. “I don’t think it was ever his intention to do that. In fact, I was a little surprised that it was elevated to egregious level 2, personally.”

Rockets coach Ime Udoka said he “didn’t like” Brooks being kicked out “considering he was elbowed.”

“He walked over and didn’t say anything crazy,” Udoka continued. “But they say it’s the rules that incentivize him to take that step after DeRozan did what he did, he got suspended because of it.”

“DeRozan was assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 penalty because the contact was excessive and unnecessary,” Blair said. “Because Brooks escalated the situation, so he received a technical foul and was ejected.”
