MBC Studios confirms Samar Akrouk as general director

MBC Studios officially confirmed that Samar Akrouk will succeed in the departure Christine Wayne as general manager.

Deadline recently revealed Wayne was leaving her role as managing director of the Middle East content giant after 15 months because she was unable to join Saudi Arabia full time.

Today, Riyadh-based MBC Group confirmed Akrouk, a seasoned employee, as its chief executive officer. She will also retain her role as production director for the wider MBC group.

Akrouk spent nearly three decades at MBC, most recently overseeing production of all unscripted production for MBC TV channels, streamer Shahid and social media. This includes local adaptations of Idol, Project track, Excellent chef, The voice And X factor. She also led the team that produced the Arabic musical film Soukarwhich was a box office success.

In her new role, she will ensure that the company’s non-English television content reaches markets beyond Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region. MBC Studios has made a big push into original production in recent years, with Rupert Wyatt’s big-budget film Desert Warrior with Anthony Mackie and a large-scale regional project HWJN remarkable on his slate. It primarily focuses on Arabic-language TV shows and movies, with English titles sprinkled in.
