A rather bizarre incident took place in the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Monday after UP Warriorz’s Chamari Athapaththu was controversially dismissed by LBW. Facing a leg spin, Athapaththu was hit on the pads by Georgia Wareham of Royal Challengers Bangalore. As the on-field umpire gave the decision in favor of the batting team, RCB captain Smriti Mandhana I decided to go for an exam. Surprisingly, tracking of the ball showed that the delivery coming from Wareham would have hit the stumps, suggesting it was a googly and not a kick.

Seeing the decision go from no withdrawal to withdrawal, Athapaththu and his non-striking partner Alyssa Healy were left perplexed, with the latter even shouting at the camera saying “no way, no way”.

The decision can be seen as a turning point in the fortunes of the UP franchise which lost the contest by 23 points.

The UP Warriorz coach couldn’t hold back his frustration when asked about the controversial dismissal.

“You look at the ball with your naked eye and you think he could throw in the line, maybe,” Lewis said after the game. “Then you watch the ball spin, well, it spins like a legpinner. There aren’t many legpinners that go to that (other) side. It was a fascinating dismissal and a major turning point for us in this game .”

The coach felt that if Chamari had been in the middle longer, things could have ended in favor of the Warriorz.

“Chamari is an extraordinary player and you saw how difficult it was when a left-hander and a right-hander played together, the quality of Smriti (Mandhana) and Ellyse Perry. And they are able to get to the short side of the field. This is one of the reasons why we chose Chamari, to be able to access the short side of the court for both right-handed and left-handed players. So losing her like that was incredibly frustrating.

“I don’t know the ins and outs of Hawk-Eye and the technology and how it works. But it was certainly an interesting passage of gameplay, and something that frustrates us quite a bit.”
