Imran’s party demands resignation of CEC over ‘election rigging’


ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistani Prime Minister imprisoned Imran KhanTuesday’s party demanded chief election commissioner immediate resignation of Sikandar Sultan Raja for failing to hold “free and fair” elections after allegations of mass violence election rigging emerged.
The 71 year old man Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said the CEC had “no right to remain in office for a single day”.
Raja, a retired civil servant, was appointed head of the Election Commission in January 2020 by the then Prime Minister Khan’s government. But Khan soon developed differences with him and began criticizing him. He increased his criticism after the overthrow of his government in April 2022.
PTI chief Gohar Khan told media after meeting Khan in Adiala jail that the former prime minister had asked him to demand Raja’s resignation. “After meeting Khan sahib today, PTI is demanding resignation from CEC. He has no right to stay in office for a single day,” lawyer Gohar Khan said outside Adiala jail in Rawalpindi , where the PTI founder was imprisoned. Since the CEC has failed to fulfill its duties, we demand that it resigns immediately so that all investigations are impartial and fair and in line with the mandate of the people,” he said.
He demanded that all investigations into poll discrepancies be impartial and free of any interference.
