'Important step to end illegal immigration': Arunachal Chief Minister speaks on scrapping of FMR

Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu welcomed the decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR)

Itanagar:

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has welcomed the Centre’s decision to scrap the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR).

Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said the Center has decided to scrap the RMF in order to maintain the internal security of the country and the demographic structure of the northeastern states.

While the Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of abolishing it, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has recommended immediate suspension of the FMR, Shah said.

FMR allows people living near the India-Myanmar border to travel 16 km into each other’s territory without any documents.

The 1,643 km long India-Myanmar border, which passes through Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, currently has an FMR. It was introduced in 2018 as part of India’s Act East policy, formalizing a decades-old agreement on free movement.

“Gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi Ji and the Hon’ble Home Min, Shri @AmitShah Ji, for their unwavering commitment to protecting our borders. The decision to revoke the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between the India and Myanmar is of immense importance to our internal security and demographic integrity of the North Eastern states,” Khandu posted on X.

This historic decision marks another important step in ongoing efforts to combat illegal immigration. This builds on the Centre’s recent announcement to fence the 1,643 km India-Myanmar border, Khandu said in another social media post.

The porous border provides easy access for insurgent groups remaining in Myanmar to carry out activities in the state’s three eastern districts: Tirap, Changlang and Longding.
