After a hard-fought first half, the Pies were torn apart by a much fiercer St Kilda side who cruised to victory 14.10 (94) to 12.7 (79).

A five-to-one third-quarter score allowed the Saints to enter last season with a 20-point lead, but they weren’t done with that.

Two quick goals to start the fourth allowed the margin to climb to 33 points. But just when it seemed the Magpies were dead and buried, the reigning prime ministers found signs of life.

Goals from Jamie Elliott and a double from Bobby Hill brought it back to 14 points and had the fans out of their seats.

Jack Higgins however then appeared to produce a superb goal from the byline which almost slammed the door on the Pies.

The goal, however, came under scrutiny with replays appearing to show Higgins had hit it over the byline.

“Higgins was out of bounds, I thought he was out of bounds,” Brian Taylor said during 7’s coverage.

“A long kick is a goal. But I thought he was out, the referee said to continue and it’s a goal.

Cameron Ling echoed Taylor’s sentiment during ABC’s coverage of the second-round clash.

“It was an incredible goal, but there was no doubt it was out of bounds,” Ling said.

Despite the controversy surrounding the goal, the spectators didn’t understand it and celebrated the magic Higgins had just produced.

News Corps’ Tim Michell wrote: “JACK HIGGINS, YOU CAN’T DO THIS. »

Journalist Steve Smith wrote: “Goal of the year. Fingers in the nose. Amazing.”

The Saints were dealt a major blow in the first term when midfielder Mason Wood was taken off after colliding with teammate Zaine Cordy.

Wood collided with Cordy during a marking contest and was sent horizontally into the air before crashing hard onto the turf.

The game was halted moments later as medical personnel rushed to the floor to check on the Saints star’s condition.

After a long wait, he was loaded onto a stretcher, taken off the field and eliminated from the contest.

Channel 7 commentator Brian Taylor said: “What we are seeing here is shocking. »

Wood was taken to the hospital midway through the second quarter.
