Snell’s presence in free agency with spring training well underway was alarming to some in the baseball world as he and super agent Scott Boras continued to hold on to upcoming deals.

However, the market just didn’t develop the way they had hoped, even after Snell won his second career Cy Young Award.

His market has started to heat up more than it has in months in recent days, with the Giants at the top of the list. With Robbie Ray on the 60-day IL as he returns from Tommy John surgery, as well as Alex Cobb and Tristan Beck set to miss the start of the year, the Giants were still looking more starting pitchers to go with ace Logan Webb and Kyle Harrison.

Snell should fit well into the rotation, although it’s unclear when that will be the case as the season begins in just a few weeks.

THE Houston Astros were also among those reported to have expressed interest in Snell, although they were considered a long shot to sign him. They reportedly “hesitated” at Snell’s asking price, which was $60 million guaranteed over two years, including an opt-out option after the upcoming season.

The New York Yankees, also looking for a rotation arm after Gerrit Cole missed the start of the season, are also reportedly moving on from Snell.

It’s unclear if this deal with the Giants includes the opt-out clause, but the money is where he wanted it. If Snell feels he can clean house with a longer-term deal in free agency after the 2024 season, he has the ability to do so with this deal.

Snell, who won the Cy Young with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018, posted a 2.25 ERA in 32 starts with 234 strikeouts for a total of 99 walks in 180 innings last season for the Padres from San Diego.
