AT&T resets millions of passcodes after data breach


If I had to rank leaks, I would say that a leaking faucet is the second worst leak, surpassed only by the most devastating of all cracks: the data leak. And, boy, do we have a data leak on our hands?

A huge cache of AT&T Customer data, including Social Security numbers and encrypted passcodes that can be used to access customer accounts, went online in March, forcing the telecommunications giant to reset millions of passcodes customer accounts, TechCrunch learned exclusively. After a security researcher analyzed the leaked data and told the outlet that the passcodes were “easy to crack,” TechCrunch told AT&T.

AT&T told TechCrunch there is no evidence yet that anyone used this data breach to access customer information and accounts.

In response, AT&T told the outlet: “AT&T has launched a thorough investigation supported by internal and external cybersecurity experts. Based on our preliminary analysis, the dataset appears to be from 2019 or earlier, impacting approximately 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and approximately 65.4 million former account holders.

Cybersecurity researcher Troy Hunt told the Associated Press that even though this particular data breach appeared on a hacking forum just two weeks ago, it looks a lot like a 2021 data breach that AT&T never acknowledged. Hunt said that if AT&T evaluates the leak and “does the wrong thing, and several years have gone by without them being able to notify affected customers,” then the company could face class action lawsuits.

In a statement on AT&T websiteThe telecommunications company encourages its customers to take charge of their security by “monitoring account activity and credit reports” and setting up “free fraud alerts from credit bureaus nationwide national – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion”.
