A woman and a man, both aged in their twenties, were killed in a shooting Saturday evening in the French Mediterranean city of Marseille, and three other people were injured, prosecutors told AFP .
“The five people were in their car in the parking lot of a McDonald’s when a vehicle stopped nearby, killing the driver and the front passenger with bursts from a Kalashnikov assault rifle,” the police said on Sunday. city attorney general, Nicolas Bessone.
Of the three injured passengers in the backseat — two men and a woman — two were seriously injured, they added.
The three men in the car were known to police for their involvement in drug trafficking and violence in the area around the southern city of Toulon, Bessone said, while the women did not. had no criminal record.
The shooting took place shortly before 11:00 p.m. (10:00 p.m. GMT) in the 16th arrondissement of Marseille, one of the poorest neighborhoods in France’s second city.
The police are investigating murder and attempted murder by a criminal gang.
One of the injured men, a 29-year-old man hit in the chest by bullets, remains in danger for his life, while one of the women lost her thumb.
The third rear passenger was only slightly injured.
Police found 7.62 millimeter ammunition casings used in Kalashnikov rifles at the scene.
A vehicle that “probably” belonged to the shooters was found burned near the scene of the attack, prosecutors said.
Marseille has seen an increase in violence linked to illicit drug trafficking in recent years.
More than 45 people have been killed in related violence in the city this year alone.
